Claiborne Ferry circa 1920’s

The small community of Claiborne is located just outside of the popular historic town of St. Michaels just 4.5 miles on Rt. 33 W on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Rich in history, the village was once a busy ferry port for passenger and automobile service between the western shore’s town of Bay Ridge across the Chesapeake Bay to Claiborne providing a convenient mode of transportation to coastal communities such as Ocean City, Md. The town was very busy at that time with numerous stores and hotels to accommodate its many visitors, of which several still exist and have been transformed into private residences.  The railroad service continued until 1928. In 1919, a competing ferry service was established between Annapolis and Claiborne which helped to improve roadways between Claiborne and Easton, Md. Ferry services eventually stopped running in 1952 when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built. Claiborne is also home to Maple Hall, a 7 acre, historic waterfront Inn built in 1800 and popular place to stay among the elite ferry passengers of the time.  The inn is currently for sale although it has remained in the same family for over 200 years. Please contact us for more information about this grand opportunity to purchase this special 10 guestroom estate with private owner’s quarters.
